Gutzon Borglum

Gutzon Borglum is best known as the artist commissioned to sculpt the national monument at Mount Rushmore. He worked on the Mount Rushmore sculpture from 1927 until his death in 1941 (the project was completed by his son, Lincoln, in 1945). Other portrait sculptures and statues by Borglum are displayed at the U.S. Capitol and Smithsonian Institution. This sculpture is a copy of an original presented to Frank Gannett in 1940 by employees of the Commercial News and other Gannett newspapers. Inscribed on the back, along with the artistís signature are the words: "In appreciation of Frank Gannettís outstanding qualities as man, citizen and employer his co-workers have inscribed in marble and in bronze this permanent record".
