Bernard Leach’s earliest years were spent in Japan. He attended the London School of Art and in 1920 set up Leach Pottery with renowned Japanese potter Shoji Hamada. Together they developed a reputation for creating classic works of simple beauty and taught many young potters the craft. Leach’s 1940 book entiteld "A Potter’s Book," with its detailed descriptions of contemporary Japanese and Asian techniques, influenced a generation of American and English potters.
