Native Rochesterian and noted photographer and art educator Carl Chiarenza studied studied photography at RIT, graduating in 1957. Early in his career, he had strong interests in both photojournalism and creative photography – he earned graduate degrees in journalism and art history, both from Boston University, and eventually a PhD. in art history from Harvard. He taught art history at Boston University, and later returned to Rochester to serve as chair of the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Rochester.
