John Liggett Meigs

John Liggett Meigs (1916-2003) attended the University of Redlands in California. After graduating, he worked as a newspaper reporter in Los Angeles and then for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in Hawaii. Interested in art-making since childhood, he left his job in Honolulu to study fine arts in Paris, France for a year. He continued to work his entire life in a variety of processes, including oil, watercolor, ink, photography, and printmaking. He also pursued various architectural projects, designing houses and buildings. Meigs is credited with being one of the first designers of aloha shirts. He had over fifty one-man exhibitions, and in 1997 received the New Mexico Excellence in the Arts award.
